Operating Systems

What is an OS?  Simple terms it is the interface between you and your computer which interprets what you do to what you see by offering a GUI (Graphical User Interface).  Windows XP, Windows Vista and now Windows 7 are the current operating systems offered by Microsoft.

If you have a Mac Computer, then you will be using an entirely different OS. Mac OS have version numbers, currently 10.7 but they also give each version a name. Version 10.7 is known as Lion. 10.6 is known as Snow Leopard.

Both Microsoft and Mac are licensed and as such, you have to have a valid licence key to use, and these come at a cost.

Along came the open market and brought us LINUX.  Another OS available and most are free to use if for personal use.  There are various types of LINUX, known as flavours, such as UBUNTU, Red Hat, SuSE and Debian to name a few.  An additional bonus that LINUX offers is whats called a Live  CD.  This is a cd that your computer boots from and loads the relevent LINUX OS without having to install it on your computer. The downside to this is that any changes made are lost when you turn the system off.  Linus OS are not for people who have limited computer skills.

The new kid on the block is JOLI OS.  This is a an OS brought to the market that will allow you to install on a computer even if it is 10 years old. It uses minimal resources on the computer as it is uses Cloud based technology. Simply think of it as you using a computer that is connected to a friends computer.  All the applications and processing power is done on your friends computer, but you get to see the results.

Internet Browser

There are some really good choices of internet browsers on the open market today, so you don't need to stick with Internet explorer. Each browser offers their own unique style and options from fast tabbing to synchronising settings between computers.

If you love Google then Chrome could be the choice for you. Integrates with all your google needs.   One of the original alternatives to IE, and certainly caused Microsoft to take note, was Mozilla's Firefox Browser.  Opera is another browser that also offers powerful extensions and handy widgets.  However if you still love your Mac and want to use the browser on your PC then Opera will be the choice of you.
